I Am
I Am Poem by Katie Crane
(selected as a 2012 Literary Harvest winner)
I am gay and I'm no different from anyone else
I wonder how people will react to this fact
I hear every eye turn on me
I see words become daggers ready to attack
I want someone to love just like you
I am gay and I'm no different from anyone else
I pretend I don't care about what people think
I feel my shell breaking becoming who I really am
I touch the memories of when I found love then lost it in that same moment
I worry that I'll never find someone new
I cry when I think of how many people are lost each day to suicide
I am gay and I'm no different from anyone else
I understand that I'll lose many with those tow simple words
I say if love is love, why should we care who it's with
I dream of the day where everyone can say 'I do'
I hope that one day we can see everyone as equals
I am gay and I'm no different from anyone else
